Worked example

Queen vs King in a real room

A King (76 × 80 in / 193 × 203 cm) is 16 inches wider than a Queen (60 × 80 in / 152.5 × 203 cm) — about 8 inches more per person and 27% more mattress area, at the same length.

In an empty 12 × 12 ft room the King mattress footprint leaves ~34 in on each side and 64 in at the foot. In 10 × 10 ft, the narrowest gap is ~22 in — below the 24 in walking-clearance guidance, before adding a frame, doors or furniture.

Bed size questions

What is the most common bed size?

In the US, Queen (60 × 80 in / 152.5 × 203 cm) — roughly half of all mattresses sold. It suits couples and solo sleepers who want room; its mattress footprint has comfortable empty-room clearance in a 10 × 10 ft room.

Queen vs King — how much bigger is a King?

A King is 16 in wider (76 vs 60), the same 80 in long — about 8 in more shoulder room per person and ~27% more area. It needs a wider room (12 ft+). Compare them to scale above.

King vs California King — which is bigger?

Almost the same area. A standard King is 4 in wider; a California King is 4 in longer (better for sleepers over 6 ft and for long, narrow rooms).

What size bed fits my room?

Aim for about 24–30 in of open walking space on each usable side. A Queen mattress footprint is commonly guided toward ~10 × 10 ft; a King toward ~12 × 12 ft. Fit a room estimates an empty rectangle with the mattress centered at one wall—it does not model the frame, doors or furniture, so measure those before buying.

Is a UK/EU/Australian King the same as a US King?

No. A UK King (150 cm) is narrower than a US King (193 cm) — closer to a US Queen. An EU King (160 cm) sits between them, and an AU King (183 cm) matches a US California King's width. Choose them directly in the two grouped selectors to compare.

What sheet size do I need?

For a fitted sheet, the package width × length should claim the mattress size within about 1 inch, and its pocket must reach the mattress plus topper depth. For a comforter or duvet, compare the calculated side and foot drop. Always check the maker's label.

Can I check a custom or non-standard mattress?

Yes. Choose Custom measurements for either bed, enter its width and length in inches or centimetres, and use that same bed in Room-fit or Bedding-fit. Custom measurements do not infer how many people sleep on the mattress.

Method

How we source these dimensions

Last reviewed July 22, 2026. Dimensions are cross-checked against mattress makers and standards bodies (ISPA in the US, NBF in the UK, plus IKEA and Australian retailers). Sizes are nominal and actual products can vary by about an inch. Bedding is less standardized: US figures are shopping suggestions only; elsewhere, use exact dimensions and verify the maker. Room fit uses only the mattress footprint in an empty rectangle.
